1. Why insulate your garage

Having a garage insulated can have the advantage of maintaining the desired temperature in the room for a longer time. Whether it be cool during the summer months or warm during the winter months, insulation can help to retain the temperature by a considerable amount. The insulation prevents the heat from going out or coming in by creating a thick layer of thermal protection around the room.

Even having a HVAC system in the garage won't be of much help if the walls are not properly insulated.

2. Benefits of insulation

Energy Savings:
Insulating the garage keeps the heat from leaking and preserves the desired temperature of the room, decreasing the power consumption of the AC or the heater depending on the season.
Environmentally friendly:
Using less power consumption decreases the need for non renewable energy and saving the planet on the way.
Comfortability:
Havving a well insulated room maintains the same temperature for extended periods making the room more comfortable.
Noise Reduction:
Noise reduction is a feature of insulating your home or a particular area such as the garage. The level of reduction will vary depending on the type of insulation installed.

Installation Instructions

1. Measurements:
The first step in the installation is to take the measurements for a correct estimate of the quantity of insulation to be used. Estimate the total area of all the walls in the garage and add an extra 5% to the total estimated area to be safe. Each insulation roll covers from 50 to 160 square feet of area. Make sure to estimate how many insulation rolls to buy based on the rolls available at the retail store.
2. Wall cleaning and clearing:
Remove the drywall if any from the walls. Clear the dirt from the walls and any debris in between the framing of the wall. Additionally check for any signs of mold before proceding any further.
3. Fill Gaps:
To fill the gaps in the wall, insulating spray foam can be purchased at your local retail store. When filling any gaps or cracks, keep in mind that the foam will expand up to 200% when dried and hardened. This process will take from 5 to 9 hrs depending on the manufacturer.
4. Install the Fiberglass:
Cut Fiberglass:
First cut the material with the same length of the height of the wall.
Staple the Fiberglass:
Make sure to staple the Fiberglass with the paper face facing the side of the stud and staple it on both sides of the insulation to the side of the stud. Keep stapling the insulation along the wall until the insulation is fixed.
Excess Insulation:
Cut any excess insulation if there is any at the top or bottom of the wall.
Cover:
Finally cover the insulation with drywall and screw the drywall to the studs.

6. FAQ

1. How long will insulation usually last:
When properly installed, the insulation will last for several decades, but due to water leaking into the insulation or other external effects, the insulation can get damaged much sooner.
2. What sections of the garage are the most effective at maintaining the garage temperature:
The effectiveness of the garage insulation will depend on the total coverage relative to the area of te walls ceiling and door of the garage. Therefore insulating the walls will be the most effective section at maintining the temperature of the garage. Although it should be noted that because heat rises, if the ceiling is not well insulated, heat will leak through the roof during the winter. Lastly the garage door will not have a large effect on maintaining the temperature, but usually due to the gaps between the door and the wal, air will leak out and this will have a large temperature loss of the room.
3. What is R-value:
The r value measures the effectiveness of a material in preventing heat flow through it. The higher the value, the better it is at insulating. The R-value depends on different factors such as thickness of the material and the material properties itself.
